AZ BridgeWorks
Stephanie Haddy
and Nancy Goulet are hard at work putting together an exciting Novice/Mentor
program for fall. They've organized a great event to kick off the season.
On Oct. 2, AZ BridgeWorks will host
"Eight is Enough," an intriguing twist and a great way to meet
other players. Be sure to sign up at the club as you are not going to want to
miss this special event.
Estella
Schotz is the most recent winner of our Cup Quest. A personalized coffee mug is
awarded to any player winning first overall five times in the month. She won
six separate events in July. You can see her picture and a short biography at www.azbridge.com.
In
July we introduced an exciting and innovative tool to assist players and
directors in scoring the game. BridgePads, a wireless scoring device, is the
wave of the future and has just become available to clubs. We will be testing
this in all our games over the next couple of months. It looks like a small
calculator and is simple to use, reducing scoring errors, while saving paper
products and time. Come try one out. We would appreciate your input.
AZ BridgeWorks has
scheduled the return of our Wednesday Jackpot games. For eight consecutive
Wednesdays players have the option of paying 50¢ to participate in the
bounty. Each week, one point is awarded for first place (in either direction), one
point for a precise 50% game, a point for bottom overall, and a point for having
no '0's during the session. At the end of eight Wednesdays, the
jackpot is split among the three high point earners (50%, 30%, 20%). It isn't
necessary that both partners enter; individual participation is accepted. Nor
are you required to participate all eight weeks (though your chances are
lessened). See John Vaneerden at the club to sign up or if you have
questions.
AZ
BridgeWorks has an enviable range of instructors and
classes available this fall.
Beginning Oct. 6, 7 and 8, Adele
Verkamp will start her popular Mini-Workshop for Intermediate Players. This
eight-week series focuses on all aspects of your advancing game. Adele can be
reached at (480) 598-9929 or addiev3@cox.net.
Eunice
Towne offers a four-week course designed for beginning and intermediate players
focused on improving your bidding and play of the hand. Standard bidding
techniques and common play problems are explained. Her class begins on Sept 4.
On
Oct. 2 Eunice begins an eight-week course designed for players who have either
completed a beginning course or are returning to bridge. If you've played party
bridge and would like to hone your game, this series is for you.
Eunice
will also offer an eight-week course covering popular conventions commonly
encountered in today's competitive duplicate game beginning Oct. 3. Students
will encounter One No-trump Forcing, Weak Two Bids, Pre-emptive bids, Michael's
Cue Bids, Limit Raises, Hamilton/Cappelleti, Modern Cue Bidding, the Strong Two
Club Opener and Key Card Blackwood.
Eunice can be reached at (602) 354-5024,
enuide407@aol.com.
Stephanie
Haddy will teach a beginning bridge class on Monday evenings starting Oct. 20.
The course runs from 7 – 9 pm for eight weeks. This class covers all phases of
your introduction to bridge, including evaluating point count, bidding and
play. Course fee is $90.00 and includes the text. Register at the club or by
phone at (480) 990-3999.
As
always, John Vaneerden is available for personalized instruction for beginning,
intermediate and advanced groups. John can tailor individual sessions to meet
your specific needs. Contact John at (480) 990-3999 or johnwvaneerden@cox.net.

Black Mountain Bridge Club
We begin our second year in September. Initially starting with Monday night
games, we've added some special events on other nights of the week. While
Monday night is, and will continue to be, our regular weekly game, more special
events on other nights will be added in the future.
Games start at 6:30 p.m. and are
scored and finished before 9:45. Reservations are required by email
(reservations@blackmtnbridge.com) to make your trip through the security gate a
breeze.
We will be holding the ACBL-wide
charity game on Nov. 24 for the same $5 table fee we charge for all games. Go to
www.blackmtnbridge.com to check our game schedule.
Many of our players aren't experts
yet, but the experts who do play here would be happy to give you a quick pointer or
two if you have a question about a particular hand. C'mon up
and improve your game in our friendly atmosphere and wonderful playing site.

BrainSport
Scottsdale is getting a new bridge
club this month. Brainsport Bridge Club will be opening at9619 N. Hayden Rd. Suite 105, in the Mountain View Center.
Ava
Lampert is the new owner along with Rick Hunt serving as director/manager.
Grand opening for Brainsport is Sept.15.
“We’re
really thrilled to be offering this new club to players in the northeast Valley,”
said Ava, noting the facility should have particular appeal to the kitchen and
party bridge players who live nearby and have expressed interest in
duplicate.
“We
hope they give us a try,” said Ava. “The emphasis will be on fun and we will be
offering all kinds of special games and prizes including free entry for daily overall
winners.”
The
club will have regular afternoon games Monday through Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
and will also feature something new to the area, Monday through Friday morning games
starting at 9:30. As an incentive for the first two months, players with <200
masterpoints play for free.
The
converted storefront property will have new carpeting and remodeled bathrooms
and we will offer snacks, coffee, soft drinks “and all the amenities bridge
players look for,” said Ava. There is plenty of parking in the center as well
as easy access from bothMountain View
and Hayden.
Rick
Hunt has 20 years experience in directing duties. In addition to DotyBridge,
Rick has directed at the Phoenix Racquet Club and the Scottsdale House, a residential
complex in southScottsdale. His late mother, Gloria, was the owner of the
old Cavendish Bridge Club which eventually merged into what is now DotyBridge.
Ava
moved here from New York three years ago with
her husband, Ron Fischer, a Scottsdale
pro who holds over 11,000 masterpoints.

Dotybridge - Scottsdale
The focus this fall at DotyBridge
is on expanding our group of novice and intermediate players. Our goal is to add 100 new players to our
novice games. Kim Corbin and Donna
Johnson will be offering a series of classes designed for beginners, advancing
novices and intermediate players. All
classes are taught duplicate style. Students are encouraged to apply their
knowledge in our Supervised Duplicate games.
Partners will be arranged if needed.
Please visit our website at www.dotybridge.com for more details.
In October, we will be
introducing a new teaching program: DotyBridge Duplicate Immersion. Taught by George Doty and designed for
players with some basic knowledge of bridge, this is a three day bridge
marathon of lessons and play. Students
will learn all the basics of duplicate bridge in morning lessons and put what
they’ve learned into practice by playing sanctioned duplicate games in the
afternoons. Offered Oct. 24 – 24, the
$100 course fee includes all teaching materials and card fees.

Dotybridge - Scottsdale (con'd)
Starting Monday, Sept.15 we areconverting our 1:00 p.m. game to a 0-99 masterpoint limit game. Given the strong interest by our novice
players, we will be adding a Tuesday session of Supervised Duplicate starting
on Sept. 16 at 1:00 p.m. We will also be
offering the same game on Saturdays starting Sept. 20 at 12:30 p.m.
We have decided to extend our
Extra Points Saturdays through the end of the year. Every Saturday, our 12:30 p.m. game will be special, including some Charity Games. The beneficiaries include various
ACBL charities, as well as a local charity we are able to designate. We have selected theVirginia G.
Piper Cancer
Center at Scottsdale
Healthcare Shea as our designated local charity. We will absorb the extra expense so our players can earn more masterpoints at no additional cost!
Due to our expanding schedule of
games, DotyBridge-Scottsdale is looking to hire additional experienced
directors. The ideal candidates will be
personable strong players and experienced directors. A demonstrated interest in
developing new duplicate players is essential. We are also looking to hire a
full time weekend Club Manager-Director. The weekend manager must be able to
work Friday-Monday. We are an equal opportunity employer and encourage all
qualified individuals to contactJan Bricklin
at (480) 443-3850.

Kiva West
While many of our members abandoned us for the summer to
find a cooler climes, our club did surprisingly well in maintaining attendance
at games.
Those remaining took this opportunity to try out some new partnerships.
Some surprisingly great results developed. Cal Marvin and Ken Boyd paired for a
STAC game on Aug. 7 and had a 74.38% game, which turned out to be the big winner in the overalls.
Meanwhile, Ray and Pat Lutes went to the Las Vegas Nationals. Since
their strata varied they picked up partners with Pat earning 32 points and Ray,
18. While Pat is more experienced, Ray has certainly developed a keen interest
in the game. Other Kiva West members who attended the tournament also did well.
Ken Boyd, the "Patch Junkie" from Sun City West, is gaining national fame.
For years, Ken, a
well-traveled Silver Life Master, has been recognized in Unit 354 by his famous vest
sporting over175 tournament decals and bridge appliqués from all over theU.S. andCanada.
This winter other ACBL
districts started to take notice by featuring the affable Ken in their bulletin
write-ups. “They did interview me
and take my picture in Vancouver, Wash. last February for the Oregon Trail Regional and that was kind of
fun,” commented Ken who began collecting the bridge patches at a Columbus, Ind.
Tournament in 1982.
Nearly three decades
later Ken is in high demand as a “patch” trader, making friends among those who
also share his passion.
“I guess so far I’m
the only one who does this inPhoenix,”
says Ken who even collects decals from far away tournaments for his bridge
partners and buddies at Kiva West.At tournaments he
carries a couple of lozenge containers on his vest with ‘in demand’ decals from
distant cities.
“I do have one of
those rare slot coin decals issued exclusively to members of the organizing
committee of an NABC in Las Vegas a few years ago plus a Tar Heel footprint from
South Carolina,” said Ken, adding that Texan Linda Green, owner of Ace of Clubs Bridge
Club in Tempe, obtained a special Lone Steer decal from a Houston
tournament.
Ken says he is always looking
for trades, so if you happen to attend an out of state tournament, remember to
bring back a patch for his vest.
Leroy Wente became a life master at the Desert Empire Regional at the age of 92. This was no surprise to many as his skills at the table were already well known. He has always spent a lot of time in active sports - he was still skiing in his 80's. Heath problems have finally limited him to the bridge table. Congratulations, Leroy!
We are celebrating Millie Singer's 100th birthday on Tuesday, Sept. 23. Millie and her husband came to Sun City West in 1982. A Silver Life Master, she still wins her share of games. Her eyesight has slowed her down, but not enough to keep her out of the winning circle. Happy Birthday, Millie!

The Peoria Bridge Studio
The end is almost here of another hot summer and we are looking forward to the return of our winter friends. We have managed to keep comfortable and continue playing in spite of the heat.
Our August potluck celebrated the Labor Day holiday. There was lots of good food and we had a great time together.
A Swiss team game has been scheduled for Sept. 6. Classes will be starting again this fall. Jim Woodside will be doing a new series with dates to be determined.
George's classes for beginners and intermediate players will also be starting up again in September.
May you all have good cards and I hope you bid and make 7NT**!
